ULTIMATE SPEED: THE PORSCHE 911 TURBO

The 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo is the perfect blend of technology and aesthetics. It’s very powerfully built and endowed with the most cutting edge hardware, but the 911 Turbo is as much a convenience car as a sports car. The 911 turbo features a twin turbocharged 3.6 litre boxer engine capable of delivering 480 horsepower.

The induction of variable turbine geometry (VTG), within its gasoline-engine interface, along with a whole new all wheel dive system coupled with a brilliant new look has helped make the 911 Turbo make its presence felt!

The latest 911 Turbo engine’s most outstanding feature is the improvement in performance due to the VTG design. The car now boasts an output power of 480 hp and a peak torque of 457 lb/ft compared to a previous value of 420 hp (output power) and 415 lbs/ft (peak torque). Furthermore, this increase is well distributed over a range of 1,950 rpm to 5000 rpm (it was 2700 to 4600 rpm for the previous turbo). The Sports Chrono Add-on Pack also gives a 10s over boost during which the torque is over 500 lbs/ft

The Porche company installed the 5-speed “Tiptronic S” automatic transmission in the 911 Turbo giving it a startling 3.4 s to go from 0 to 60 mph. The standard version gives the same increase within 3.7 s. However, the top speed remains at 193 mph irrespective of the transmission system used.

All that power would be no good without an excellent transmission system to channel it. So the all wheel drive system was redesigned and the old viscous clutch was replaced by a electronically governed multi disc clutch. The novel Porche Traction Management (PTM) system makes sure that all the wheels receive all the power they require to maintain ideal traction. The PTM uses electronic circuitry to determine the optimal distribution of torque among the wheels. The brakes on the 911 Turbo have also been made larger and more powerful in order to augment the increase in acceleration.

The physical appearance of the car has also undergone a sea change. For instance, the new Porche 911 Turbo is wider than the previous model giving it a royal appearance. Additional changes have been made along the spoiler end to match the over all contour of the 911. The air inlets have been lined with LED lights to give it more definition and impact. The fog lights, set deep into the body, make the car look alive. But it’s not all beauty and glamour! Some of these changes, like the newly drawn cooling inlets, also add to the performance of the 911 Turbo.
